Assignment: The purpose of this assignment is to create a lesson plan and help each other to enhance each other lessons. As we begin the process of creating lesson plans, together as a team, we can work collaborative to assist each other in this process. The focus in this assignment is to work together, not to create the "best" lesson plan (which does not exist, as it depends on many factors).

  1. Create a lesson plan for a lesson you will teach during your mentorship (Due: April 11th)
  2. Teach the lesson and reflect on your teaching experience (at bottom of lesson plan) (Due: April 18th)
  3. From your reflections, enhance your lesson plan (improve it) (Due: April 18th)
  4. Go to 2 other students (see names on front page) and add some specific comments (at least 2) on how they can improve their lesson (new activities, more adaptations,...). Comments do not include statements like "good job, or well done", comments are meant to be suggestive, constructive and encouraging. (Due: April 18th)
  5. After the comments are given to your lesson plan, make adjustments accordingly (adding options to your lessonplan e.g.... improve it once again) (Due: April 25th)

Grading: Completing all 5 assignments on time will get you full credit for this assignment.

Melinda's Lesson Plan

Grade Level: Kindergarten & 1st Grade

No of Students: 25-30

Class Topic: Fitness

Equipment/materials: 100 Index Cards, Pictures of foods,  eight poster food pyramid guide.

4 blank food pyramid charts, laminated pictures of food that represent each food group, lamenated sheet listing what locomotor skill to be performed during lesson focus, poly spots , two colored pennies. CD player and music.

Gym/class set-up: Students split up into teams, gym will be divided in half with students on one half and index cards and hula hoops on the other end.

Objectives: The student will be able to:

Psychomotor- safely perform a variety of activities while learning about nutrition

Cognitive- explain what foods go in the food groups

Affective- work cooperatively with a group and demonstrate knowledge of nutrition

Lesson Process

     Introduction:

“Our lesson today is on nutrition and body composition. We will first discuss the Food Pyramid, (Show poster of Food Pyramid) it has different levels or categories for each food group. The orange is grains (breads, cereal, chips), green is vegetables (tomato, broccoli, carrots). The red section is for fruits (apples, bananas, fruit juice) and the yellow is a small group that is oils. The blue section is milk (milk, cheeses) and finally the purple is meat and beans (chicken, hamburger meat, peanut butter and beans).

Nutrition is the study of food and how the body uses it.  Today we will explore how well you know which food goes into which group. We will play an activity involving different foods and placing those foods in the proper food groups.  After we warm up we are going to learn how we will place foods on the food pyramid chart.”

     Warm-Up:

       Parnter noodle tag

Each student will pick a partner and they will chase their parnter with the noodle given to them. Once their partner is tagged the student will then drop the noodle and take off running. The tagged student will then pick up the noodle and chase their partner, or they can chose to chase a different student. This process begins again after the student chased is tagged, this kind of activity keeps all of the student's activity and having fun.

      Lesson Focus:

Nutrition

Organization: Students will group themselves, four to five students to a group. They will then stand by one of the stations with their group.

Procedure: Explain to the students how the activity will be played. Working as quickly as possible the students will break up into groups. After the groups are assigned the students will then move to one of the playing areas.

1.      Nutrition Fitness:

The purpose of this activity is to review the appropriate servings from the food pyramid. Students will engage in physical activity through this activity using teamwork and cooperation.

1.)    Students are divided into groups of 4 to 5

2.)    Scatter 3x5 index cards in the center of the gym. Each card has a picture of the food on the front of the card and a fitness activity on the back. For example, banana is pictured on the front of the card and 5 jumping jacks is written on the back.

3.)    Place teams around the perimeter of the area, each with one poster of the food pyramid

4.)    Each group will have a lamenated sheet that lists what locomotor skills they are to perform and during which time. When the music starts, each team sends 1 person to the center to pick up any card and bring it back to the group. The group looks at the food and place it on their pyramid, they put it where it needs to go. Repeat sending a new team member to the center and back. (Each time the students will be asked to perform a different locomotor skill, i.e. skipping, hopping, sliding, walking, and jogging.

Closure:  Students seated in the corner of gym facing instructor.

Does a strawberry go in the grain group or the fruit group? (Fruit group)

What color is the fruit group on the food pyramid? (Red)

Adaptations for students with special needs: Place students with disabilities on teams with students without disabilities. If necessary help those students who may need extra assistance and have a classmate assit them.

Reflection (after teaching the class):

I taught the lesson during a time off during fitness testing and the students liked running around and using their team members do complete their pyramid. I did notice that the lesson was a little tough for them to comprehend and complete, so I have changed it a little and will try to teach again to see if it is better for the students. I did recieve good comments from my mentor teacher about incoporating nutrtion into their physical education and it made the lesson even better after talking with him and making changes. I would definately teach the lesson again, just with changes. After teaching the lesson again, I found that the student's needed some kind of direction in order to help them perform the locomotor skills. So I created a lamenated sheet of five locomotor activities, in which they would complete on their way to get a food and bring back to their food pyramid. This seemed to help the students perform the different locomotor skills and not just the same one over and over again, plus it gave more structure to the lesson and they seemed to like the structure. I also changed the warm-up, because it seemed the students were getting a little bored of it quickly and it seemed similar to my lesson focus. I switched to something a little more fun for them.

The questions seem a little hard for kindergarten and first grade. You might want to think about giving them choices. Something like: Is a strawberry or bread in the grain group?

Great lesson plan but it seems a little hard for this age group. At this age group they probably know nothing about food groups or serving sizes, etc. You may try doing what Robbie suggested and having them just put different foods into their correct group instead of dealing with servings. From my experience with this age group this seems a little complex. If you do this lesson plan I would make sure you had adults in each group helping them.

Excellent changes to make the terminology easier for younger students Melinda. A great way to incorporate healthy eating with Physical Education. Well done!
